Inspired by this post, here’s a graphic and a link roundup:

No new content Sept 1 2017, in protest of Tumblr @staff‘s complete lack of effort to take any action to control rampant white-supremacist hate speech on this platform.

If GoDaddy and Google, Discord, and even OKCupid  (and even Facebook and GoFundMe) can take steps to curb hate, why can’t Tumblr? (Users have been complaining for years, it’s not like this is a new problem.) Tumblr consistently refuses to enforce its own no-hate-speech policy in this matter.

(There’s even a lovely write-up of it from this very month: Nazis On Tumblr Are Attempting To Make White Supremacy Hip.) (There’s a change.org petition about it too, which has a nice write-up of exactly how much absolutely-nothing Tumblr @staff are willing to do about egregious hate speech.) (No, I’m not involved with either of those links, nor the original post I’m referecing above, I just thought I’d Google it before I made a graphic. I know very little about this but it all seems pretty gross, now doesn’t it.)

I’m posting this now, then I’ll put it in my queue on the 1st and have that be the only thing that posts on that day (for those of us who can’t shut our queues down easily, that’s a solution). And then, no posts, no replies, no chats, no inbox, no messages, no visits to the site for the duration of the 1st in my timezone.

48 Hours Silence

It’s September the first in Australia. It will be September the first tomorrow in the States. Therefore, this blog is going dark for two days.

Because @staff will mark photographs of black people as “sensitive”.

Because @staff repeatedly refuse to rid their site of Nazis, Nazi sympathisers, and fascism apologists.

Because I will not tolerate antisemitism, fascism, sexism, racism, or prejudice.

You may have the right to free speech, but I do not have the obligation to listen.

If you want any further news of me: look here.

This blog is going to go silent, and I am telling you why.

Tumblr’s shitty reblog system with the unnecessary graphics has made reblogs unreadable for people with dyslexia and other sensory processing issues.

For the last two years, I have basically made my career out of being readable. I need to be readable. And I especially need to be readable when I’m reblogged.

Reblogging my shit gets my shit seen. It gets me an audience. It sells my stories [not as often as I’d like, but what can I expect? I’ve only been at this a couple of years]. And it showcases my skills to anyone who wants to google me.

Readability matters. It matters in large font with all the emphasis you care to add.

Without readability, I am sunk. I’m fucked. Screwed over. Up Shit Creek in a barb-wire boat without a paddle.

I’ve noticed an amazing lack of reblogs since the update and I can only guess that it is directly due to the shitty system that now exists. That’s direct loss of audience. Loss of income. Loss of attention.

I’m about ready to port all my posts to Soup.io and start all over with the loyal few who actually bother to follow me there. What I need to know is whether or not Soup has an inbox system similar to or better than Tumblr.

Hell, I have actually been pondering learning how to program a better site than this one. And I have the computational prowess of a rotten whelk.

TL;DR - I hate what staff have done in a sad effort to crib notes off of Facebook and YouTube. I stand with the people who want easier readability, because readability matters to me.

And I hope you stand with me.

Silent for 24 hours for the reasons stated above.

My dear readers will be glad to know that Beloved and I are finally re-invigorating internutter.org as a blog site. There may or may not be an arena for peeps to chat amongst themselves. I dunno yet.

The primary thing is for my daily Instants to have a fully readable area to exist. You’ll be able to share them on any chosen social media site.

can we just like, all agree to boycott tumblr for 24 hours to show the staff that we’re pissed about the update? because they have to track usage and stuff like that, and I feel like it would send a pretty big message if enough people did it. like nothing fancy, just don’t use tumblr from 12:00am to 11:59pm, one whole day of nothing, not even mobile blogging. maybe set up one queue’d post explaining why you’re boycotting (so anyone that doesn’t get the memo would know what’s up) but other than that maybe even stop queues (just for the day) to help send the message.

I’d propose Wednesday, September 9th as the day. That’s one week after the update, one week to give it a try, one week to show the staff that we’re not just overreacting to change (the way people are apt to do on the internet) but are serious about not liking the way they’ve changed our blogging experience. That also gives us a week to get this post around the site: long enough to spread it around, but not so long that people forget that we’re going to do this. Maybe set a reminder on your phone or computer so that you don’t forget. I’ll be posting in the tag #updateboycott throughout the week for general reminders and to answer any questions/suggestions.

And please, reblog this. The only way this will work is if enough people see this post and participate to make a difference.

so tl;dr: hate the update? join the boycott of tumblr on Wednesday, September 9th from 12:00am to 11:59pm by just not using tumblr that day.

Thanks.

also: different timezones are a thing, so wouldnt it be ultra cool if we all agreed on 24 hours in the same timezone? so it really makes the biggest possible impact?

I realized that after I made the original post. The boycott will begin at midnight on the american east coast, which means:

9pm Sept 8th PST (US & Canada West Coast)

10pm Sept 8th MDT (US & Canada Mountain)

11pm Sept 8th CDT (US & Canada Central)

12am Sept 9th EST (US East Coast)

5am Sept 9th GMT (England)

6am Sept 9th CET (Central Europe)

1pm Sept 9th JST (Japan)

3pm Sept 9th NZST (New Zealand)

1pm, 2:30pm, and 3pm Sept 9th (Australia)

thanks to everyone who’s pointing this out, please try to reblog this with the times on it!

staff, you dun goofed. Instead of making this site more accessible, you made it very much less so. All you have to do is remove those bloody stupid mini-icons. That’s it. Why is this so hard for you?

Anyway. Even though I kind of like being able to read the beginning of a long-arse thread of replies, I stand with the people of Tumblr who want to be able to read posts at all.

I am going silent on September 9. [That’s September 10 for my fellow Aussies]
