Breaking news: the Cabinet Minister who has been accused of rape in 1988 was Christian Porter, as was everyone’s suspicion. He categorically denies it and that he simply never slept with the anonymous woman - though does acknowledge that he knew her. He also has said that there are parallels between him and Bill Shorten, who had a historic rape allegation against him from the 80s that was investigated by police and subsequently dropped. The difference he says between him and that is that Porter has been unfairly done by a trial by media and had calls to resign, while Shorten got no flack whatsoever he claims. He says the first he heard of it was through the media and refuses to resign because he doesn’t want to set a precedent where allegations can ruin someone’s career. He repeatedly referred to the allegations and surrounding interest by the media as a “trial.”
The police won’t continue the investigation as there’s insufficient evidence to pursue it. The anonymous woman has recently died by suicide and thus cannot pursue it further, or contribute any further information on the allegations. There’s, thus far, no independent investigation lined up.
Porter says that he’ll be taking a mental health break.
