@matzahball

For a second I didn’t realize it meant “high” as in a stoner–I thought “High Geologist” was like a rank of geologist or something and he was insulted you would challenge him to naming stones

So I was eating some Gorgonzola tonight becuase Gorgonzola is delicious and I was looking at the ingridients label and noticed it says ‘Penicillin’.  I know you’re not supposed to have ‘blue’ cheeses if you’re allergic to penecilin, so I’m wondering-

How closely are chese penicillin and medical penicillin related? There’s the famous story of Dr. Flemming discovering it’s antibacterial properties after contaminating a petri dish- did he get blue cheese in it? In a hypothetical post-apocalyptic scenario, could you derive the antibacterial agents from a spare piece of gorgonzola?

Mostly I want to write a post-apocalyptic Medical Cheese Heist but I feel morally obligated to be mycologically correct.

Medical Cheese Heist is the name of my Weird Al tribute band.

FWIW, I believe there’s anecdotal record of battlefield doctors, prior to the discovery of antibiotics proper, using moldy bread on wounds because “Eh, sometimes it works?”

Also, apparently if you were to grow penicillin mold artisanally at home, one of the best mediums for growing it is cured meats. So in theory, if you wanted, you could have a Medical Charcuterie Heist wherein your heroes steal a nice platter of assorted blue cheeses and dry salamis.

According to the notes Cheese!Penicillin is in the same genus of but a different species than Medicinal!Penicilin, and doesn’t produce the Antibody Chemical, but the original strain of mold that Medicine!Penicilin has since been bred from is derived from a strain that grows on Cantaloupes so Medical Charcuterie Heist is still on, but is MCH: Melon Melodrama which sounds like the album name for the Weird Al Tribute Band.
