Daily OpusEverything I write is freely rebloggable. Just keep the source and tell people about my books :D [Until I decide otherwise, my pronouns are Ze/Hir/Hirself. As in "Ze went to the shops to get hir medication hirself". Thank you for the respect.]
It takes creativity. It is the act of putting something on paper, that when others see it, a unique picture is drawn in their mind. All guided by the author. I definitely call that an art.
Wait, there are poeple who don’t think writing is a form of art??
The post was practically perfect in every way, and then somebody went and added Julie Andrews, thus shooting it into the realm of utter and absolute perfection.
So I’ve never done anything like this before. I’ve created a song in my miniscule down time working on Steam Powered Giraffe business stuff.
It was a sort of therapy for me to get away from all the hard work we’ve been doing in the group…stress and all that stuff…
The weird thing is… It’s a Steam Powered Giraffe song, but it currently has no plans to be a Steam Powered Giraffe song. It’s not going to be an an album or anything that I know of….but I had to make it…I was compelled to. That’s a bit weird…but it’s how I feel about it right now. We’ve got tons of cool songs lined up for the album though…this just popped into my head a few days ago…and I made it instead of playing The Last of Us. :3
It’s far from a finished product…I mean I threw it together in a few days working like an hour or so each day. But it came together quickly…
This is just a prototype. So be warned! I thew it together in a few days… That means it is far from polished and not ready for human consumption. You’ll have to excuse the cheesy synthetic horns…they sound bad. Sadly I didn’t have time to record a full horn section in my down time :P But they get the general idea across. Even with that… You’re probably going to pour it down your ears anyways because the temptation is too much!
Anywho… This is a high concept song. I’ll explain why…
Here’s the breakdown…
The Spine falls in love with a human warrior woman while battling bad guys with her. They both have katanas and it’s really sweet and awesome and cool and stuff.
They frolic together and are happy together in their puppy love, which blossoms into a caring and understanding of each other…but then one day they’re surrounded by bad guys again.
Epic battle ensues. They’re kicking butt. Hatchworth and Rabbit join the fray.
At the last moment The Spine dodges out of the way when a big bad boss dude throws his sword at him. The Spine cuts him down.
Sadly the sword impales the warrior woman and she dies.
The Spine is sad. Buries her and visits her grave when he can.
Think of it like a really cool music video that could be made if we had the time, money, and proper swords. Black silhouettes for all the characters during battle, white weapons, colorful hand drawn backdrops.
It’s cool right?!
Now imagine the song finished, with Rabbit and Hatchworth in it…and the instrumentation better and not synthetic… Michael Reed adds his magic to the mix…and Sam and Bunny giving their input….then Steve tells me it’s not chiptunes and we play DnD instead…and Matt does some killer drum stuff..and maybe blows some horns for us…
AAAANYWHO… I am sharing this with you all because it’s on the back burner, not slated for Steam Powered Giraffe currently (I got the okay to post it from Bunny) and making it was actually a bit more personal for me.
The idea and the inspiration was all sparked from a lovely lady who has made me really happy recently, and when I am in a good mood…I CREATE, even when we are pushed for time, in the middle of a gazillion shows, creating an album, and the timing is just bad all around. HA!
But anyways… there ya go.
This is not an Engineer-eteer exclusive. Just a David Michael Bennett song about The Spine falling in love. Art imitates life sometimes.
That’s weird right? Me writing a song for Steam Powered Giraffe but not as Steam Powered Giraffe? I mean obviously it’s The Spine singing, but it’s me doing the song. Maybe it sounds a bit like Postal Service here and there…or Owl Shitty…or…whateverIdunnoknow…it’s a PROTOTYPE!
But now you know my lore ideas for The Spine’s lost love. SUPER SECRET STUFF!
If I wasn’t coming down from a stressful week, I probably wouldn’t have shared this.
But I did.

WHENEVER YOU SEE THIS POST ON YOUR DASH, STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND WRITE ONE SENTENCE FOR YOUR CURRENT PROJECT.
Just one sentence. Stop blogging for one minute and write a single sentence. It could be dialogue, it could be a nice description of scenery, it could be a metaphor, I don’t care. The point is, do it. Then, when you finish, you can get back to blogging.
If this gets viral, you might just have your novel finished by next Tuesday.
I should put this in the queue and reblog it a million times to make me actually WRITE, DAMMIT
Rest stops on highways are liminal spaces where the veil is thin and nobody can tell me differently
Explain
The explanation is that liminal spaces are in between places that bridge Here with There, so in fairy tales we often have the Fairy Ring, the Forest Clearing, the Sudden Misty Foggy Forest, the Bridge, the River, graveyards, in some cases
We also have a ton of american urban mythology around famous roadways and sites off the sides of roads
Archetypes like these occur to mark the places in the world where the veil goes thin and humans can have extra-worldly experiences, out of the ordinary way of living
So why wouldn’t transient spaces like rest stops where everyone is just passing through from one place to the next, never stopping for too long, not be a liminal space where spirits frequent, too
Especially since nobody would know if they were real or not
Ok but this speaks to me
I always feel like something isn’t quite right at rest stops
I once slept though three gas stations on a road trip, and the second the car started to slow to turn into a rest stop, I was basically wide awake.
My mom and I were on I-90 in a blizzard once and pulled off at the first exit we could find. Turns out that if we’d gone even a mile further, we would have happened on a 49-and-counting car pileup, and that 90 was closed for MILES. How we found an unblocked ramp was a matter of great debate, but where this gets weirder still is that at the bottom of the ramp was a closed truck stop and an open church full of teenagers–they went for youth group, the blizzard started, and they were stuck until the snow stopped. They fed us leftovers from their potluck dinner, prayed with us for safe travel, and when the snow let up they saw us on our way.
Three days later–Sunday–we were traveling back and decided to stop at that church to thank them. We found it thanks to the truck stop, but this time it was the truck stop that was open and the church that was closed. Neither of us remembered it looking so decrepit on the trip down, and granted we saw it first at night in a snowstorm, but you’d think we’d have noticed the boarded-up windows. So we asked in at the truck stop.
The church had been abandoned for ten years. And yet I still had one of their youth group programs under my sun visor, very clearly labeled for the previous week.
To this day I’m sure we crossed dimensions somewhere on I-90, and that’s how we stayed safe. You could tell me it’s because the truck stop was a liminal space and I’d 100% believe you.
I don’t mind when this post goes around again because sometimes I get stories like this
