Challenge #03056-H133: Must Love Cats
They took in unwanted stray cats and dogs from around stations, especially taking them away from DeRegger places, and took them to a massive new station that, once they were spayed / neutered, they lived happily and were well loved, and learned to love, until they were adopted out. Unfortunately, not all visitors to Humane Station were the friendly sort. However, not all the unfriendlies were… all that unfriendly. Especially when two new faces saw a group of spacers bullying caretakers, and cruel to the frightened strays.

It had once been a popular waystation before the local planet became a reserve for Pax Humanis. Many people think those two facts are related, but it is simply basic chronology. The popularity waned as other, more efficient trade routes opened up. The fact that the local planetoid was a Deathworld had little to do with it.
The point remained that many derelict areas had been overtaken by the station’s biota. Jay, not at home on planetary surfaces, took one look at the resulting wilderness and decided what improvements it needed on the spot. They could also see what it was perfect for. All that neglected space would never be shopping emporiums or living habitats again. What it could be, however, was the perfect catio. Not just for Skitties, though they’d be able to visit, but also for the regular varieties of Cattus Domesticus.
He liked cats, and so did more than a few fellow members of Pax Humanis. They were more than willing to help set up the space to be friendlier to felines, as well as assist in the fostering of abandoned or neglected felines. The station, now renamed Humane Station, quickly became a kitty haven. Some of the cats taken in would also be adopted out, once they passed strict inspection.

Challenge #02975-H052: A Jay of Sunshine
Hey InterNutter, about this Prompt, about the kid that started killing young due to the brutal life they grew up in? https://peakd.com/fiction/@internutter/challenge-02894-g337-humane-accommodations
There’s been an interesting chat about it and could you confirm / deny for us? Now I’m dying to know!

Hm, I’d love for this guy and Mr. Sunshine to meet up. Heh. “Twins by spirit if not by blood?” That would be interesting, what do you think?
ryivhnn 67 9 days ago
Yes to this! Unless Jay is Mr Sunshine? :O
bkf 45 4 days ago
Interesting theory! Comfortable sweaters, sensible shoes, loves cats, maybe Jay IS Mr. Sunshine. Taking on a new name after he left Independance? I could see him using an alias instead of his birth name, given the pain of his family life. And then I can see him secretly sending money to his mother and surviving siblings from his paychecks and selling his paintings so they can live a good life.

Awesome headcanon backstory, I’m running with that til we find out more (if we find out more XD). – DaniAndShali
[AN: Goes on an archive trawl to find all of Mr Sunshine’s stories…]
Even now, in an age where technology can outstrip theology, there are angels. Just like the written angels, they are terrifying in person. Unlike the written angels, you can’t tell they are just by looking at them. This was a planet for such angels. The ones who were sent to deal with problems with surgical precision and a great deal of blood down the drain. Jay had been assured that he was with his own kind. Fellow angels.
Here’s the real thing about angels. Some come with a fiery sword and a heart bursting with justice. Others come cold and calculating with an exact measure of what is right and what is wrong. In this area of verdant gardens and lazy felines, there was an angel sitting at an easel. Jay knew how to pronounce his name.
“Mister soon-sheen-eh, I presume?” Jay said, moving carefully around to view the canvas. They had assumed that this man was like Pops. Like the other cancers they had cut out of society. Jay expected the man to lash out with his pallet knife at any given instant.

Challenge #02713-G156: Pax Origins
A shockingly smart and devastatingly cruel crew track, hunt, raid, and kill the biggest threats to peaceful ships. – LatinoThor
They called themselves Dragons, for the ancient tradition marking hazardous seas with, Here There Be Dragons. Their territory was astonishingly vast for what encounter logs suggested was one ship. The last records in the surviving black boxes stated that one ship was seen, but that didn’t mean that just one ship was there.
Authorities were slower to act about the attacks, since the Dragons were routinely attacking bands of pirates bothering the Alliance shipping lanes. The Dragons were selective, picking the worst offenders who killed passengers and crew to get what they wanted. Some of their first targets were those who blew up the ship and used any survivors in livesuits or life pods as target practice.
Authorities only knew their name because they announced themselves before their attacks. When one black box revealed that the Dragons were also Humans… there was even less inclination to track them down and apprehend them. Not even when the space pirates were “licensed privateers” from an antagonistic polity in the Edge Territories.

Challenge #02688-G131: Big and Loud
In the depts of the Archive, a Song was found. It was made Public property.
Naturally, Pax Humanis found a good use for it….

[AN: Warning for ten-hour video. Please don’t do that to us again?]
War is an endless cycle. Tactics circle around and come blasting back from the past. In such cases, the siege turns an impasse into an endurance test. Of course, there are strategies to make certain a siege ends faster than the defending side expected.
Tactics that include flooding the base, attacking the supplies, sapping the walls, and psychological warfare. Only some of this has been banned by the Cogniscent Rights Committee. As far as battle tactics are concerned, sound assaults are a potential grey zone. The volume must not exceed a certain amount of decibels, and the frequency limit has been tested against all known tolerances.
Thus, when Pax Humanis has a siege, they have an approved playlist for the sonic assaults. This does not stop the besiegers from applying their own variations. They did maintain the songs on the list, according to the very letter of the law. The variation was in the spirit.

Challenge #02637-G080: The Right Tool
Logging for Records (date here) Video log shows a helmeted figure with an already darkened faceplate.
Shadow, Hunter, Last Scream, I’ve had a lot of nicknames over the course of my career. Most of them pretty accurate, I will admit. I am a stone cold killer and I have never failed to take down my target. But I’m not like the Pax Humanis guys, not by a long shot. My mind is as clear as a bell. I don’t take pleasure in this job, I do it because it’s necessary.
My current target is a space station ran by a DeRegger group. Proof had been shown they are having havenworlders kidnapped to use them like animals for experimentation. This rotten core has to go. You want to destroy an entire place, you send in the sledge hammers, the Pax Humanis. You want a precise strike, you send in people like me. Clear-minded, swift, merciless, deadly. Now it is time to cut out the rot, and leave the fruit intact. In I go…..
Log ends, to be updated during mission with mission brief after completion. – Anon Guest
Of all the range of Human insanity, none is more powerful than the delusion that the sufferer is perfectly sane. Some perfectly sane Humans can blend in with other citizens, but others… Others are like Human Hue. She was another part of Pax Humanis. Some were bludgeons. She was a scalpel. Kept separate from the bludgeons of the more infamous section of Pax Humanis, she was employed, and deployed, with precision.
Some called her The Vapour, some called her Shadow. Some named her Hunter. All were accurate. Some called her The Last Scream, which was inaccurate, since she caused others to do so. She was put into play when only one needed to die.
Human Vae considered herself perfectly sane. She had paperwork to prove it. She had a logical and rational mind and thought everything through. Including her kills. Some people, she rationalised, needed to perish for the greater good. They were the only ones who were necessary eliminations. She did so quickly, efficiently, and without any other trace of her passage.

Challenge #02519-F329: For the Greater Good
Several Enforcers of Pax Humanis teamed up and took down a pirate’s ship. They were tearing the ship apart from the inside-out when one hears crying in one of the cargo holds. Tearing the hold’s doors off, they find dozens of children, human and haven-worlder, locked in cages with price tags already printed on the tops of them. Now they have children to care for, and the potential buyers? Were about to get a lesson in what it meant to mess with the innocent on Pax Humanis’s watch!
Before anyone gets any really bad ideas, this harkens back to a disgraceful era in human history when children were sold off to become zoo attractions. Or, if they had odd deformities, sold to circuses to be part of the freak shows. – DaniAndShali
[AN: Actual shitty things Humanity has done to other(ed) Humans. You can google this yourself. Actual children - usually children of colour - were exhibited in zoos like animals. Though the freak shows used to contain the crown stars of circuses, it wasn’t that great to know your own parents sold you for profit. Nowadays, the deformed have to fight tooth and nail for any assistive devices/living helpers they need and get stared at when out in society. Hooray for progress? /end rant]
They had been sent to deal with space pirates. They knew what to do with those. Though the Faadraxi had thrown up their hands and pleaded incapability when the Alliance attempted to get them to enforce Galactic Law… they were quick to attempt amelioration when Pax Humanis was put into play. Too little, too late, by far.
Now, a suspiciously military-esque Faadraxi vessel was dead in the water, so to speak, with a team of five nasty brutes making certain there was nobody left to pull any stunts by methodically pulling the ship to pieces. Bulkhead by bulkhead, they searched the vessel. They found drugs, porn, secret stashes of pastries and treats, photos of home that also included suspiciously military backgrounds. Those were good evidence.
