The Motivation Equation

I thought I’d go against type and do a thing ahead of time. One less thing to have a concern over, I guess.

What are you doing?

No, don’t jump down here!

WHERE ARE YOUR PANTS??? – Anon Guest

Here’s the thing with having Humans on your ship. Sometimes they are young Humans and don’t always know the rules of proper behaviour. It is difficult to know which Humans are capable and which are… less… capable until such time as they reveal their limits. Humans are a relatively unknown species and those taking the risks of their company on the Edge are more or less on their own. This is merely a compilation of what we have learned…

Humans like a challenge… The new ships’ Humans were about the same size as the average Thoqnath, at least at the port where they signed on as security guards. They had amenably compatible omnivorous diets. And they apparently had an arboreal ancestry, since they loved to climb… everywhere.

Their limbs were too long and their feet the wrong shape for Thoqnath hop-rungs, so they used literally everything else, including the sides of the maintenance tubes, to get up or down between decks. They also made use of air vent passages or just took their joy from getting somewhere awkward to be.

It was vaguely conical, and smaller than the most popular cars of the late Terran Twentieth Century. This was a vessel designed to get three Humans back to their planet after a long and perilous journey to truly hostile territory. There was just enough room for three Humans and all the samples they had gathered while they were up there.

What was more worrying was the landing craft for their missions to the moon. Computational power had barely reached past the Babbage Machine, and some of the most important elements were hard-coded with wires woven through tiny ring magnets. In lattices that were swapped out as necessary.

They could have easily died a thousand times over on the trip there. A thousand more on the way back, with hundreds to spare for the actual surface of the moon. Yet, by the time the third such mission was underway, the rest of Humanity found it boring. Which pretty much sums up Humanity in the smallest of nutshells. Do something often enough and, no matter how risky, dangerous, or expensive, it will be tired and old hat to any Human observers.

Challenge #02046-E222: Mundane Profundity — Steemit

It was a cross-stitch sampler in a frame, and it had profound words carefully sewn into the underlying fabric. It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are. Next to it, another one read, I will face God and walk backwards into Hell. And it featured a sewn representation of matching, very human, obscene gestures. A third read, Best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. Second best time is today.

Humans, for all their insane bloodthirsty shenanigans, had some profound words come out of them, sometimes. Rox picked up one that said, We are all parts of the Universe, seeking to understand itself. “Where do these come from?” ze asked.

The Human running the stall was wearing the brown robes of an Archivaas. “That one is from an ancient drama set in an imagined future, roughly in our present day. Others in this collection are from the Pre-Shattering Nouveau Dadaist era of what they called ‘shitposts’.” They briefly touched the one with obscene gestures. “Many are from expendable entertainments called video games.” This time, they held up one that read, I survived because the fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me.

pick-me-ups for writers

oddhour:

for the self-conscious beginner: No one makes great things until the world intimately knows their mediocrity. Don’t think of your writing as terrible; think of it as preparing to contribute something great.

for the self-conscious late bloomer: Look at old writing as how far you’ve come. You can’t get to where you are today without covering all that past ground. For that, be proud.

for the perfectionist: Think about how much you complain about things you love—the mistakes and retcons in all your favorite series—and how you still love them anyway. Give yourself that same space.

for the realist: There will be people who hate your story even if it’s considered a classic. But there will be people who love your story, even if it strange and unpopular.

for the fanfic writer: Your work is not lesser for not following canon. When you write, you’ve created a new work on its own. It can be, but does not have to be, limited by the source material. Canon is not the end-all, be-all.

for the writer’s blocked: It doesn’t need to be perfect. Sometimes you have to move on and commit a few writing sins if it means you can create better things out of it.

for the lost: You started writing for a reason; remember that reason. It’s ok to move on. You are more than your writing. It will be here if you want to come back.
