ARGH D:<
Okay, so you remember how I was trying to make more earrings for the fantastic Miss Isabella Bennett…
I’ve hit a snag.
Namely, that pierced studs no longer have a flat bit I can just clip the stem off and then that stud is mine to play with… nope. They have a fucking NIPPLE on the back now for no reason whatsoever.
It basically means that I can’t glue ex-studs to the clips, any more.
I have tried everything I could think of. I’ve tried clipping that metal ‘nipple’ off. I’ve tried sanding it down. I’ve tried gluing it anyway.
All failures.
My options are either (a) give up[Not a chance], (b) muck around with hot glue gun glue and mould something to fit[Ugly as fuck, no way], or © find some other magic to aid in the conversion.
I wonder if soldering irons can help? Do they produce sufficient heat to re-mould that fucking ‘nipple’?
I can’t art. It’s obvious.
Alas, I also lack the resources to purchase pro-level art for a book that will never pay me back.
My usual design consultant [aka best-beloved SO] is too busy to help me before the October 4 publication date.
So. Speaking as someone who lacks design skills to everyone who actually has them: What do I need to do to make this cover look cool?
My goal is simple, but slightly “off”. Like a Penguin Classics cover from an alternate dimension. You remember how they had the title and some old etching art with a crappy colourisation job on the cover? Something like that, with a hint of eldritch.
That’s why I put the shadow effects on the title, to make it look like it was about to float away from the cover.
As always, I insist that my name is in a smaller font size than the title.
Hints and tips appreciated, peeps. Just remember I have limited Photoshop skills [I moebius’d the front wheel of the bike myself :D It took me five hours and fifteen goes.] so if you’re going to get technical, break it down to the For Dummies version :)
I wanted a title font that looked slightly unhinged. Better suggestions also appreciated. Thanks in advance for all your help.
What would you do to make this look cooler?
Rebaggling in the hope of some feedback on this thing.

Building Bitzer part 8
This interesting little gizmo is a Clicker. That’s my official name for it.
dakhur tore down a rattling toy gun, and a couple of non-functioning toy cars to build this nifty little device.
It’s up to me to figure out how to make it work. And I have the gear-sense of a dead whelk. I have gears, thanks to a secret cache of asthma medication thingies [I know, so technical] and only the vaguest of ideas on how to proceed.
The outside gear turns clockwise when I’ll be cranking counter-clockwise. Just to add to the fun.
So far my ideas include having some sort of rotating cam to pull the trigger for me or getting hold of a gear-and-things toy and repeatedly fiddling it to death until something works.
Hints and tips welcome.
Beta Readers Wanted
I’ve just written a creepy story for All Hallow’s Read.
I need a better title, methinks. And it’s going to need a cover.
Mayhem just read it in less than ten minutes. All I’m asking is half an hour -max - of your time and FEEDBACK.
And if one of y'all can bodge together a cool cover? That would be awesome.
Who’s in?
Well, shit
I got an email this morning from the very nice people at Bespoke Book Covers telling me that I can have my deposit back.
Science fiction is a little more complicated than your mainstream book covers, I guess.
I bear them no ill will. Working on the covers for the Hevun’s Child trilogy was more than a little frustrating. On both sides. I did my best to be nice about it and I completely understand why they decided to not get into another wrestling match with my ideas of a cool cover.
You’ve all seen what I’m capable of. It’s an abomination.
So.
I’m appealing to any artists or photoshop maestros out there.
Do you want to work with this author, get credit and money, and make cool book covers to sell my equally cool stories?
YO! Beta-readers!
You have until THIS FRIDAY to get back to me with anything.
Then, after I finalize the premiere edition, I will be sending out the second book.
In the meantime: I would very much appreciate pithy little quotes I can attach to the cover art via twitter so I can advertise the fuck out of my own book.
I would appreciate even more, folks reblogging the cover-art shill I’m doing on a daily basis here on Tumblr.
Must generate buzz. Anticipation. Without putting out spoilers.
All help in this endeavor is appreciated.
So who wants in?
You might be aware that I’m trying to make a living with words. Anyone who doesn’t… go check out my Smashwords account and buy something, plib-blobbit!
Ahem.
Thing is, I need beta-readers. People willing to read things-I-consider-finished, things-I-don’t-know-what-I’m-doing-with and things-I’m-checking-up-on-to-see-I’m-still-going-in-the-right-direction. AKA WIPs.
I have a whole pet universe I want to share. Short stories, long stories, stories of inbetweenish dimensions… all waiting for readers to help with the quality control.
And I can’t afford to pay because… well… I don’t have an income as of yet.
I’m also going to be experimenting with my pricing and, if I’m really lucky, find someone willing to do some better covers than my own considerable lack of skill.
Anyone who wants in, please send me an email address [either by ask or by reply, whatever suits you] and I shall be sending you some PDFs in the nearish future.
Are you game?
Another call for beta-readers
As always, I am working on various fictions to publish with an eye towards making a living out of it.
I need some brave souls willing to plough through PDF’s of both finished and unfinished works of mine and send rational arguments about what I’m doing wrong and why… or, even better, suggestions on how to make it better.
Please send your email in my ask-box and I will send you a soon-to-be-released work that is almost ready to go.
The more beta-readers I have, the clearer idea I have as to whether or not a work can make it.
Thanks, all my peeps.
