• A crowd of churches along a one-road town
• The town is a pub, a servo, and a mechanic’s
• Tall trees, hairpin turns, suicide hills and a 100km/hr speed limit
• 5 km of dead animals ahead. If you’re unlucky, some of them will be your favourites
• The passing lanes are always on uphill slopes or dangerous passages of road
• 2km to a passing lane. It’s been three, but there’s 2km to a passing lane
• Take a breather, tired driving kills. You see this every five minutes after you’ve taken a breather.
• Slow down, it’s a dangerous patch of road. Of course there’s a passing lane and everyone behind you speeds up.
• You see your car coming the other way. You’re also at the other wheel
• 116 km to your destination. You’re getting closer
• There’s been a fire. There’s been a car crash. It’s been decorated with police tape, but as far as you can tell, nothing else has been done
• The cave, the creek, the bridge and the town all have the same name. You’re invited to see it for ages before you pass the tiny side road that might take you there in another four hour’s driving
• Falling rocks, no braking
• There is a truck tailgating you until it passes in the next passing lane. It turns off five k down the road to refuel, reload, or rejuvenate. You sigh. There is a truck tailgating you. There is always a truck tailgating you
• Rest stop in 5 minutes. Just 200k down Youreguaranteedtogetlost Lane, or on the wrong side of the road against dangerous traffic or, it’s just a very small park with a frozen outhouse in it. But don’t worry, there’s another rest stop in 5 minutes
