Fire Watch 12 Feb 2020.

Not shown on this map: The cyclone off the northwest of WA, and the cyclone off the east of the Gold Coast [QLD/NSW]. This is not normal weather. Cyclone season usually hits at the end of Spring towards the middle of Summer.

This is happening towards the end of Summer.

Climate Change means more extreme weather, increasingly out of season. @neil-gaiman was right. Australia is the canary in the coal mine.

Fire Watch 10 Feb 2020.

Queensland is no longer on fire! Meanwhile, Sydney is somehow dangerously flooded and on fire. I’ve provided a screenie of a map from news (dot) com (dot) au to prove it [source]. They’re telling people not to go to work, they’re making noises like Sydney should be evacuated… it has to be scary beans down there for sure.

Warwick, in Queensland, has had two years’ worth of rainfall in two days. Also scary beans. Dams are overflowing, rivers are flooding, and there is just too much water everywhere.

…not a peep about it from the folks allegedly in charge. Especially since everyone and their kid brother’s dog knows that all this is due to climate change now.

Fire Watch 7 Feb 2020

The top end’s getting a decent soaking and high winds, both from the cyclone off of WA and the torrential [potentially flooding] downpour on the SE coast. Yet… we’re still on fire.

I think the fires have finally moved away from Canberra a bit, which means that our allegedly glorious leaders can go back to pretending it isn’t happening at all because it isn’t happening to them. You know, business as usual.

The weather’s hit the news, with the media calling it the heaviest rain in years. 500mm could come down on the east coast inside of eight days. That’s half a meter or (roughly)one and a half feet for those who have trouble picturing that.

Droughts, fires, flood, and disease. Welcome to the apocalypse.

Fire Watch 6 Feb 2020

SE QLD is currently being soaked by a tropical downpour, and WA is apparently due another cyclone, so they’re going to be extinguished and in danger of flooding. Yay? Ish?

Tasmania’s less on fire, but all of NSW and VIC are somehow more on fire despite the statistical likelihood of everything being charcoal by now. Canberra is more on fire than ever, it seems.

BTW, this map is as zoomed in as I can get and still able to capture the whole of Australia, so if I’ve obscured your neck of the woods, go to unorthadox (dot) com (dot) au (slash) fire and zoom about to your heart’s content. Followup stories about your personal experiences might even help more people realise what an enormous clusterf*ck this entire situation is.

The news is bored with the bushfires and it looks like it’s getting bored with Coronavirus as well. The leading stories on news (dot) com (dot) au are all over far more important stuff - like the AFL and Rugby. Because bread and circuses or something.

The good news? We’re about to get the heaviest rain in years, all over SE QLD and the top end of NSW. [The better news for me is that my compy didn’t die doing this so yay]

The news is still all about the Coronavirus, like a plague is a good distraction against every single tourist destination being on fire. The plus side is that now there’s a group of artists sabotaging political posters under the hashtag #BushfireBrandalism :) Keep Scotty from Marketing on his toes, maybe.

Labour acknowledges that all this fire is because climate change. Hallelujah. Whether or not they change their tune when the Coal Dollar comes calling shall remain to be seen.

Less total fire, more scattered fires. Technically a win? I guess?

Politically, the worst mob of xenophobic dicks -aka the One Nation Party- is getting a lot of funding and please tell me some bodies corporate are involved because I do NOT want to swap one bunch of intolerant fascists for another.

Fire Watch 2 Feb 2020.

You know what? I’ll take more dispersal as long as there’s less fires overall. It means the resources aren’t stretched to breaking in one specific area. Canberra, our nation’s “fair” capital, is doing an amazingly horrifying impersonation of hades, at the moment. The news is all about the Coronavirus and people are upset about one island being the dumping ground for everyone who’s at risk.

It just keeps on going…

Fire Watch 1 Feb 2020.

We’re more on fire, again. Meanwhile our allegedly glorious leader is dodging questions about sports money used to apparently curry favour with electorates who don’t like him. Taxpayer dollars going to a blatantly transparent attempt to bribe an electorate. Nice.

This is also the man who took money out of NDIS - away from disabled people already having a tough time getting benefits - in order to cover the billions in damages from the fires that could have been prevented with the same taxpayer dollars.

Fire Watch 31st Jan 2020.

Less fire up top, more fire just about everywhere else. Sigh. The news is going bonkers about the Coronavirus and I understand how firkin scary that is. This could be 1920′s Influenza levels of devastating.

That said, this country is still on fire. Help is still needed. Action is still necessary. There is still a problem.
