Here’s a few things you should know:

Fanfiction is a gift

Fic writers don’t have to share their works with you. They don’t have to write them at all. They do it and they share it because they’re fans of the show/book/movie etc. just like you, and they want to contribute to everyone’s enjoyment of fandom.

Fanfiction is hard to write

You need a lot of creativity and passion to write fic. You need a ton of motivation and drive to write a complete fic, let alone a good one. Fic authors write for hours and hours and hours, often staying up late into the night just to write. They write through job struggles and personal issues, resorting to phones and tablets when their computers are on the fritz, tapping away on public buses and trains just because they can’t find any other time to write.

Fanfiction is free

Fic writers give away thousands and thousands of words of pure fandom magic, and you get to consume all of it for the wonderful price of nothing. The only reward writers receive for themselves (besides a sense of accomplishment) is the response they get from you, the reader. Some don’t even feel that accomplishment until they see kudos and comments telling them how much their work was enjoyed.

Please.

No matter how much time you have, even just clicking the kudos button takes less than a second. And if you have time to read 5k words at one go, it’s no stretch at all to take a few more seconds to type ‘good job!’ or ‘i loved this!’ in the comment box and hit send.

Still not convinced?

1. IF YOU’RE EMBARRASSED / SHY,

Fic authors LOVE hearing from you. Don’t worry about whether you think you’re going to phrase your response well. That’s literally the last thing we care about. Just knowing that you had a good time with something we made is EVERYTHING to us.

2. IF YOU STILL JUST DON’T SEE THE POINT,

I have a very special challenge for you, my friend.

Write a fic.

Go forth, and write a complete, well-structured, well-characterised fic with organic, stimulating dialogue interwoven into a proper, fully fleshed-out storyline.

Publish your work for all the Internet to see.

And then get back to me.

A thousand times, this.

in addition, please comment respectfully always 💖 fic writers are the life blood of fandom!

Yesterday while talking to @skyler10fic, I did some math to get a very rough estimate of how much time I’ve spent on TISAF. At 15-20 hours per chapter, I’ve clocked well over 750 hours–probably closer to 1000. That means I’ve spent over 2000 hours on the series, and possibly as much as 2500.

My shorter works generally take 5-15 hours per chapter, depending on how elaborate the story is and how much prep work I have to do. I’d say that to date, I’ve probably spent 4000 hours writing Doctor/Rose fics. Well-written fanfic takes a huge amount of effort. Please leave feedback.

I spent a year writing a fic (I don’t have the brain to break it down into hours, but a year is a long time) and by the end of the fic I was getting minimal feedback and it was the most discouraging thing in the world.

Writers will literally stop writing without feedback. Remember that next time you say “this person is my favorite” and then proceed not to leave them a review.

The interviewers always ask the same thing - they did for college, for the IPRE, and plenty of interested individuals have asked after everything is over - “What made you want to learn transmutation magic?”

Taako knows the right answers, and there are plenty: reasons like finding the magic interesting, or natural inclination, or a love of learning.

He wonders what any of them would do with the honest answer. He watched his sister starve. He felt hunger like a horrible, clawing beast in the pit of his stomach and he didn’t know if either of them would live from one day to the next. No amount of genuine interest or natural skill could compete with fevered desperation. He exhausted his spell slots and he could not get it wrong. The two of them could not afford any less than perfection from him, and Taako would like to see any “rigorous” college program replicate that level of demand.

Taako knows they ask the same question of Lup. He knows that she doesn’t tell them about people bigger than them, looming and calculating, pulling on their arms and lurching towards them. Those aren’t the answers that anyone wants.

Nobody likes to think of the silly, goofy, vibrant twins as children who only just survived, day to day. So they don’t talk about it.

They don’t bring it up on the ship, not after cycles have passed and everyone on the crew has died at least once. Barry talks about why he decided to go into necromancy and Taako doesn’t comment. Merle chuckles when Lup and Taako both snipe at him about wasting food. Lucretia watches in interest as Taako sews a shirt back together for the fifth time instead of throwing it out, as Lup inventories the kitchen meticulously. The twins both scored exceptionally well on the survival aspect of IPRE testing, but sometimes Davenport forgets that, until they’re tracking down the light and he’s reminded. The twins don’t talk about it, but so much of who they are is made up of who they had to be to get the chance to grow up.

One cycle, there’s a world that never has enough food, and Taako and Lup fall into a routine that’s well-practiced. Spell slots are measured out daily, rests are scheduled, and Lup shows the crew how to preserve any extra food they find. Everyone is always hungry, but no one starves.

Taako hasn’t worked this long perfecting his transmutation magic to let any of his family starve.

I envy writers.

As an artist I can give you a snapshot into a world.

But a writer.

A writer can take you there.

They can weave together words and create a portal to anywhere. You can visit those places instead of looking out a window and wishing to be a part of it.

I envy writers.

I envy artists.

A writer can give you a story.

But an artist.

An artist can show you the exact emotions behind everything.

They can paint a picture worth a thousand words without ever writing one. They can show you every single emotion, every single thought in a second. They can show emotion like a writer never could.

I envy artists.

I will never not reblog this!

Presumably, if adult humans are weird, then human kids must be weird as well. But of course, since aliens probably wouldn’t interact with human children too much, there might not be much about them in the human guide.

Imagine a human leaving her kid with an alien friend because her SO is sick and none of her human crewmates are able to act as babysitter and she’s got an important meeting. So she goes to the meeting and the alien takes her kid to one of the rooms in the ship that acts as a sort of play area.

Then, when the human comes out of the meeting, she picks her phone up and sees that she has some missed calls…

1st call: “Hey, Katie, it’s me, Grit. I know you’re probably in the meeting by now and can’t answer your phone, but I was just wondering… Jackie’s been chasing the other kids a lot, is she hunting them? Is that part of the whole predatory instincts thing? They all seem to be having fun— at least I think so, they’re all making that weird noise you guys make— but I just thought I’d let you know. And, um, listen… she’s not going to try and eat the ones she catches, is she?”

2nd call: “Hi, Katie, Grit again— look, I know that you guys are descended from tree climbing mammals and so your offspring need climbing equipment to satisfy those instincts— but there’s no way she’s supposed to be that high, right? None of the other parents are doing anything and I can’t go up and get her down because my hooves can’t get a grip on the frame. She’s right on top and— NO!<incomprehensible noises that sound like a cross between the moo of a cow and the bray of a donkey>— okay, so she’s swinging from the bars. One of the other humans just explained that that’s normal. He’s offered me some coffee, but I said no because I’m pretty sure that stuff’s toxic. I’ll try not to call again unless there is an emergency.”

3rd call: “I’m so sorry, Jackie’s been injured. She tripped over and seems to have lost a layer of skin from her knee. She’s making these noises and there’s liquid coming from her eye sockets and I don’t know what to do! Please pick up! There’s blood and the coffee offering human keeps saying she should suck the blood out or something. Is that a thing? Does your species’ saliva have healing properties? Shoud I call a medic?! Please pick up!”

4th call: “Sorry for that last message. Jackie seems to be doing fine now. I don’t know how— she should be laid out for weeks after an injury like that! Please, for my sanity, can you get a human babysitter next time?”

Reverse Fairy Tales

kayteaem-fic:

  • A prince with a love of the sea undergoes a terrible shipwreck and wakes, briefly, while being rescued by a mermaid. Obsessed now, he requests the help of a land witch and gives up his “charm” - looks and speech - for a tail. Silent, disfigured, and lost beneath the waves, he discovers that though he can breathe, every breath he takes feels like fire in his chest. Still, he hopes to find the mermaid who saved him and someday earn her heart…
  • A young, beautiful wolf with a coat as red as blood is off to visit her grandmother - now living in another pack. She’s warned by her mother not to approach the path, for humans lurk there. However, the pup ignores her mother’s advice, lured away by a girl’s tempting treats, and later at dusk, when she finally arrives at grandmother’s, a whole group of hunters sets upon the pack…
  • A young man is selected to keep a fearful ‘beast’ company, living in a castle far out in the woods. Yet when he arrives, he finds not a beast, but the most gorgeous woman the land has ever seen… one who claims to be under a spell. She is not human and utterly despises this form, but the spell will not be broken until someone loves her for reasons beyond her appearance. This man, gentle and well-read, may one day look past her beauty and if he does, he may still love the ‘beast’ that then springs forth…
  • A princess is told by her father that she must marry and a ball is planned to find her a husband. Angry and panicking, she flees to the edge of her kingdom where she finds a young man, living with two brothers and an abusive stepfather. These fast friends hatch a scheme: the princess will take one of the man’s shoes, claim it belong to her one true love, and send her father on a fool’s errand to find the ‘prince’ to which it belongs. In return she will help the man escape his family, if he wishes, at least for one night - at the ball. But when they dance together, more than friendship might form…

autistic pride is so important because autistic children like myself are constantly treated as and made to feel like burdens to their loved ones, their family, and even society as a whole.

we literally get people saying things like “if i was autistic, i would kill myself” and caretakers who get sympathy for wanting to kill autistic kids. people will justify our existence only by how productive we are and how neurotypical we can appear. when parents find out their kid is autistic, it should not be immediately followed by an apology.

like, no, being autistic is not always fun or easy to deal with, but you can’t separate me from my autism, and i can’t keep feeling like i’m some kind of unfortunate happenstance.

autistic pride is important. i am not a burden. and if that means i’m ‘romanticizing autism’ or ‘glorifying it’, so be it.

autistic kids deserve better than this.
