The Ballad of Delilah Morreo Written by Isabella Bunny Bennett
“The blood runs thicker than the water for Delilah Morreo the daughter of the mad confider, bat and beast and wolf and spider Never had a chance at all to save her precious mortal soul The reaper’s hold would not let go, for poor Delilah Morreo”
In Ds9, there’s one thing that so often bothered me. I’ve written about it before but let’s do it again.
Its about the idea of Kira as the hope of Bajor.
Throughout the seasons, but particularly in the first seasons, there was several story lines about some random guys coming forth as the “hope of Bajor”. This particular dude can bring hope and stability, he can unite us and lead us. Kira always defended this dude, stood by his side, supported him, spoke for him.
Why was never Kira this hope?
The writers always cast Kira as the side character to powerful men. Like Bareil and Shakaar, most noticeably. She was just as capable as any of these guys. She fought in the war, she had contacts in the government, she had ties to the Federation. (I realize that Kira being more closely linked to the government would disturb her place on Ds9, but let’s ignore that for the moment).
The episode “The siege” is such a good example here.
In “The siege” Kira basically saves Bajor. She and Dax fight their way to Bajor to deliver some proof to the chamber of ministers that the bad guy is bad. They use their skill, imagination and power.
Here we have Kira, this fighter and actual Bajoran hero, getting to the chamber of ministers and saving the day. And all of this is apparently so that a dude that hasn’t actually done anything can become a legend and a hero.
It is such an anti climax.
I absolutely feel that if Kira Nerys had been Kira Charlie, she wouldn’t have been repeatedly reduced to a side character in her own story. The fact that the people that were actually hailed as heroes or important were always men says something.
It can be argued that Kira never wanted glory. And sure, that is a perfectly good story line for her. She has always fought in the dirt against the odds, no thought to glory. But then the writers never needed to write the stories that constantly made her the sidekick instead of the main act.
A rocker whose brains were definitely not fried. But, um, like, wow! That’s freaking amazing.
QUEEN RULES
man, wtf is it about Astrophysicists named Brian being in kickass bands?
everything turns into queen if left alone long enough. even, apparently, NASA.
Queen is like … the most overqualified band in history.
Brian May had a BS in Physics and had started his PhD but Queen was getting very famous so he put it on hold. He did go back and attained his PhD in Astrophysics in 2008.
John Deacon is a electrical engineer and would build custom equipment for the band.
Roger Taylor was in school to become a dentist but switched and got a BS in Biology instead.
Freddie Mercury had a degree in Art and Design. He he designed the Queen crest himself.
I still totally want a TV show staring Brian May and Brian Cox.
Good lord, you scared me with this for a bit. Whenever I see nice photos of Brian May on my dash, I think it’s a memoriam thing. He’s such a gift, and my heart’s just not ready. <3
Two years have now passed since Nissan first promised it would deliver a commercially viable self-driving car by 2020, a pledge that seemed bold verging on dangerous at the time. Today, Nissan showed what kind of car might carry such a system five years from now, and if anything, the future looks like it might come even sooner than expected.
Dubbed the Nissan IDS, the concept combines radically sharp bodywork with an electric drivetrain powered by a 60-kWh battery—good enough for roughly 200 miles, much like the upcoming Tesla Model III and the Chevrolet Bolt. To offset the weight of the batteries, the body was made from carbon fiber, and while the shape has too many blades and pivots for everyday use, it’s not that far removed from what a radically redesigned Leaf might resemble.
It’s inside where the IDS offers the break with automotive history that may come from self-driving cars. In driving mode, the steering wheel sits in its traditional place, but when placed into “piloted driving,” the wheel folds away and a set of screens emerge to entertain the passengers. Nissan has even given the driving assistant something of a personality; the car will mimc the driver’s style, and has another forward-facing display that can flash messages to pedestrians.
Nissan chief executive Carlos Ghosn said the automaker was well on track with its tech goals, with plans to offer what it calls Piloted Driving 1.0 on models in Japan next year. That system can change lanes and drive in light congestion, but needs fairly constant human attention. Piloted Driving 2.0, the type suggested by the IDS, will arrive on schedule around 2020—assuming such systems are legal. We’ll have more this week on Nissan’s plans, but at this point, the hurdles to cars that drive themselves look to be as much about people as technology.
I can’t wait to leave a message on that front facing display that reads “fuck off dirtbag”
The Giving Pledge is a campaign to encourage the wealthiest people in the world to make a commitment to give most of their wealth to philanthropic causes. The campaign specifically focuses on billionaires (or those who would be billionaires if not for their philanthropy) and was made public in 2010 by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates.
Kendra Haste creates the most incredible, life-like animal scultpures using layers of painted
galvanized wire atop steel armature.
Kendra Haste is a contemporary animal sculptor who uses galvanized wire as her medium to create large and small lifelike creatures. From
the muscular body of a lion to the delicate hairs on the monkey’s neck,
you will be amazed at how much detail she weaves with what most people
would consider plain chicken wire.
“No other material I have ever
used has been able to suggest the sense of movement and life, of contour
and volume, the contrasts of weight and lightness, of solidity and
transparency – values that I find in my natural subjects. It is the
perfect medium, inviting continuing exploration and challenge,” Haste says.
