Daily OpusEverything I write is freely rebloggable. Just keep the source and tell people about my books :D [Until I decide otherwise, my pronouns are Ze/Hir/Hirself. As in "Ze went to the shops to get hir medication hirself". Thank you for the respect.]
They suddenly had money, fridges, freezers, and access to a variety of foods - all things that hadn’t been widely available before. Suddenly people had access to things that were beyond the dreams of people just a 100 years prior.
Enter corporations willing to go “oh yeah, you know what’s great (now that you can afford it)? Cold beef soup, served in a glass. Drink up your beef!”
Early 40s/50s foods are something I’m very passionate about.
They had no concept of what flavors tasted good together so they tried everything. The biggest ideas that were latched on to were things like loafs with layers that compose your entire meal and the suspension of basically anything/everything in jello (jello actually helped food last longer, because the gelatin sheltered whatever ingredients were used from bacteria. So, naturally, you put a fish in it).
Also pineapple. It was harder to get before then so the sudden availability of it made people go nuts. Bananas too to a degree.
Welcome to the wild and wacky world of Aspic, otherwise known as meat jello.
jello history is a fucking trip
i am pretty sure the entire 1940′s was made out of hollandaise and aspic
Aspics were around for a LONG time before the ‘40s… again, it was about the best way to keep leftovers edible.
IN FACT, ASPICS ARE HOW USING AGAR FOR PETRI DISHES GOT INVENTED
The science dudes started out using gelatin but a) some bacteria just dissolve the shit out of gelatin so it turns into goop and smells terrible and b) it melts at like 80-90F so you can’t incubate it at body temperature on account of, again, it turns into goop
so this lab tech named Fannie Hesse started using agar instead of gelatin
why? because agar had been used in southeast Asian cooking forever to make food do the gel thing, and it was starting to get adopted by European cooks to make things like ASPICS THAT DON’T MELT IN THE SUMMER
which apparently had been a thing that plagued European cooking previously?
anyway 50/50 this is a story about the triumph of girl power and also how to profit off of the knowledge & biology of non-European places, or “colonialism in a nutshell.”
the dudes in the lab had been futzing around for years trying to find different ways to make gels for growing bacteria, but none of them tried agar because none of them knew it existed. Fannie had learned it from a Dutch ladyfriend who’d learned it during her girlhood colonizing Indonesia/the Dutch East Indies, where people’d been using agar for centuries to make jellies that don’t melt in the tropics. European men at that time… did not cook. So it was pretty much impossible for knowledge of agar to spread through male social & professional networks.
so anyway that’s the story of how horrifying jello salads, colonialism, fucking off gender norms, and seaweed came together to bring us pretty much the entire science of microbiology.
New original 3D animated movie: Ducks. The secret life of ducks when humans aren’t looking.
Whenever ducks fly south in the winter, they’re actually flying to a big city of ducks where they talk and have jobs and have traffic lights with pictures of ducks in them and every billboard and storefront is a bird pun.
A generic duck guy is a young adult who feels inadequate because his dad is a big broker in the bread stock exchange.
He accidentally reveals the secret life of ducks to a human child, and now he must take her south with him to duck city. On the way they get into hijinks and find out about a big duck conspiracy or something.
I was thinking at first this was an actual movie
It will be if you just give me 3 years and $150,000,000
How many times would “duck” be confused between the physical action and the animal in question?
12 times for comedic effect. 1 time used ironically in a sad moment in the end of act II. And 1 time in the last act when the protagonist has to say something badass when he defeats the bad guy.
This winter, ditch the binoculars and rediscoverbird-watching with the hot new movie…….DUCK!!!!
If this post gets 100,000 notes I’ll start working on the script.
Well then…
Let’s get to work.
Without further ado, and over a year in the making:
Why is this even a problem? If you need more citizens, take in more immigrants or refugees. It’s not like America has a shortage of either wanting to come in. If you can’t make your own citizens, imported is fine.
How Millenials are killing the baby industry
“If you can’t make your own citizens, imported is fine.”
I don’t mean to kill the joke, because that really is funny, but I also want everyone to know that the panic behind birth decline in the USA is a dog whistle white nationalist one. Part of the game plan for Christian fundamentalists and white nationalists is to outpopulate minorities of color, which leads right into their specific kind of sexism where they freak out that white women have alternatives to marrying straight white men and devoting themselves full-time to popping out kids. And their racism is partially related to trying to make the consequences for black and other non-white mothers steep, deter that demographic from growing.
Historical Nazis had “Kinder, Küche, Kirche”, and modern white supremacists have things like quiverfull. They want to take planned parenthood offline, and they appeal to white men by promising a reproductive family or at least access to sex with white women should their ideology win out.
But the unbridled greed of capitalist markets has kind of unintentionally screwed that interest. The economy hasn’t recovered, and that might serve racists by making things doubly hard for PoC who don’t own wealth, but the amount of wealth that middle-class and working-class white citizens own is shrinking. Many ‘innovations’ aren’t doing anything to promote stability and confidence spending money but instead profiteer off insecurity and inability to invest in services + goods long-term. So even white people aren’t having babies. The panic of an overt racist at that fact might be really profound but because so much of our society is built to assume white households perpetuating wealth is the center of our way of life, there’s also a background, low level anxiety that is felt by a wider public.
He’s super dope.
He did this with his phone. I can only imagine what he could do with training and real equipment. Support Black Kids!
They’re MADD talented!!! #BlackExcellence
Woah. Lit
Yo I said young dude must have been a director/producer from birth.
Former Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein may be eyeing a recount in three states.
Political observers on Wednesday noticed Stein had launcheda fundraising page on her website for a recount.
“After
seeing compelling evidence of voting anomalies, the Stein/Baraka Green
Party Campaign is launching an effort to ensure the integrity of our
elections. With your help, are raising money to demand recounts in
Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania– three states where the data
suggests significant discrepancies in vote totals,” the page reads.
It goes on to say the group needs to raise “over $2 million by this Friday, 4pm central,” to ensure a recount.
This has to be for Hillary Clinton since there’s no way she’d call for an audit herself. Jill Stein knows good and well she didn’t win any states.
Reblogging here to get word out as fast as possible. Donations to the fund for a recount are needed by THIS FRIDAY by 4 PM CT.
Even if you feel in any way uncertain about this, isn’t it better to donate the money and it go to nothing, than to not donate and find out something that could’ve been done wasn’t due to lack of funds?
So the deal as I understand it is:
* If Clinton were to call for a recount in any state, and the recount in that state did NOT turn out to elect her in that state instead, she would be required to pay the cost of the recount in that state.
* They do that to keep people from just vengefully, constantly demanding recounts for no reason.
* When it says Wednesday here, it means today. As I write this. November 23rd. (Awww, it’s also the 53rd anniversary of the first episode of Doctor Who! ANYWAY)
* When I first saw the call for donations, it was at $45,000 out of their $2,500,000 goal. An hour or two later, it was at $80,000.
* It’s been less than 12 hours and they’re now up to $1.3 MILLION, more than halfway to their goal.
* They’re actually going to pull this off.
* I am not going to look it up for each state (you can google “who can ask for a recount in Wisconsin” or wherever but WI has a whole book about it and no thanks), but it looks like yes, Jill Stein can in fact ask for a recount. In Michigan, you have to be one of the people who ran, and lost, to ask for a recount. That seems to be standard practice.
* If Jill Stein calls for a recount, she DEFINITELY has to be the one to pay for it, since there is no fucking way it’s going to be like “Hey, guys, Jill Stein actually won!”
* I honestly think this is amazing. Even if it doesn’t work.
* Because this means that there were like… unless there are other third-party candidates that were on all three states’ ballots, there were probably only threepeople on this earth who had the ability to call for a recount. Two people with the interest. And one who is actually doing it.
* And for the first time in history, there is actually a way for everyone who wants this to immediately find out that it’s possible and throw money into the pot.
* Everything Trump is already doing is so fucking horrible, and the only saving grace is how incredibly hard people are organizing around every. freaking. single. thing. Again, we’ve never simultaneously had an election like this here, and an organizing tool like the internet, and it’s just.
I have multiple friends who are spontaneously posting to Facebook with shit like, “I am horrified that it has taken this kind of election for me to finally
start hearing through my white privileged ears. I was not in action. I
was complacent. No more.” (actual quote from a middle aged, upper-middle-class, straight cis white woman in Minnesota)
People who were already radical are now even more radical. There’s a powerful shift happening, and powerful communities being built.
I’m seeing people come together to support projects and nonprofits and communities and issues that were already SUPER necessary, that they are finally realizing desperately need support. Doing things that were always needed, that now they perceive as an emergency and want to do anything to fix.
Everything is so horrifying, but this gives me so much hope in the middle of it.
Like, earlier today I was crying because Trump announced he was going to eliminate funding for NASA to study climate change because he thinks it’s “politicized” science.
Now I’m crying because I’m so moved by all of these people giving whatever they can to make sure there is a recount in the most important states. By the visible evidence that we’re a real force now; that people aren’t just committed at a “tweeting/reblogging about it” level, people are like, NO. WE FUCKING STOP THIS NOW.
* And in the time it took me to write this, they’re now at more than $1.4 million.
