long rant about the adaptation of the watch ahead

I’ve been a fan of discworld almost all my, i read The Wee Free Men when I was 6 or 7, and just kept reading more Terry Pratchett from there. The night watch is one of mya favorite discworld series, and when I first heard there was going to be an adaptation I was excited! I tired to stay optimistic as more and more information came out, I really did. But now all I have to say is WHAT THE EVER LOVING FUCK BBC?

I think many of my points can be illustrated by this photo, starting with Lady Sybil. Yes, that slim weapon wielding woman in the front is supposed to be LADY FUCKING SYBIL RAMEKIN. WTF. Lady Sybil is supposed to be a middle aged, overweight, not very pretty woman. She’s doesn’t wield weapons, but she has huge strength in her kindness, knowledge of people, knowledge of power, robust strength of character, and general badassery! She is not a fucking 25 year old model in a sexy trench coat with an axe! By changing her character this way, you’re undermining the very reason lady Sybil exists.

Next is Cheery Littlebottom. Now, before I rant about this, let me preface: I haven absolutely 0 issues with characters who dont conform to gender as society expects them to. Non binary, gender fluid, genderqueer, even just cross dressing is awesome!! Love em! Give me more characters like that! But don’t change an already established feminist character. Cheery Littlebottom is amazing in the books. She’s a dwarf who defies her culture of women being an embarrassment and embraces her femininity. She stops pretending to be male like her culture demands, and starts dressing and acting the way she truly wants to be. It’s damn inspiring. SO WTF IS ADAPTATION CHEERY? This adaptation completely changes the message and themes of this character. Cheery isn’t even a dwarf in this! Where is her beard?? Why did the bbc take do this to such a cool and iconic character?

Next, detritus. I just hate the way the designed the trolls tbh. Go aback to ensign school. They really fucked them up imo. 


next, something not contained within the above picture, but WHY IS CARCER THE MAIN VILLIAN? He is literally only a villian in a flashback book! A damn good villian, but WHY IS HE HERE?
And why do the deep downers look like discarded early doctor who monsters? Why is angua’s hair short? I mean I don’t have huge issues with this but it was fucking iconic. And why is she training carrot, he’s the one who’s been here since book 1? She hasn’t??? Why is the setting like this? Why did the gender bend vetenari (tho I don’t have a big problem with this, I just don’t know why???) 

In short, my point is: the BBC has sucked the magic out of pratchett, changed things that do not need to be changed in a way that undermines the meaning behind the characters and story. They’ve ruined themes, characters, just about everything. Fuck you BBC adaptation of the watch, I sure fucking hope your better than you look.
