We’re Losing Our Home
Here we go again! I’m back and I need your help. I’m a nonbinary writer living in the Detroit area. I’m physically and psychologically disabled and unable to work. My sister’s and my living situation has suddenly become scarily untenable. Our landlord is trying to sell the house we rent from him, and the only way we found out was when a real estate agent showed up at our door last week. Our rental agreement should guarantee we don’t get kicked out until April of 2020, but I don’t know if we can trust our landlord to honor this since he didn’t give us notice that he was trying to sell in the first place. This is the last straw in a long sequence of events that have left me traumatized, sick, and unable to stay where I am.
Money is the biggest hurdle. We’ve had to front money for 3 cars so far, each with a laundry list of repairs, and between paying for that – most of which went on credit – rent, student loans, and basic needs like food, we have no savings and no room in our budget to create savings. The good news is that there’s a state-run program that helps low-income, first time home buyers get a mortgage on a house! My sister and I are working with a real estate agent to apply. This is our best shot because both the initial investment and monthly payments are FAR cheaper than renting anywhere around here. This would go a long way to easing the psychological burden on me too, since it would be a long-term housing solution, which means I can stop having the unending sense that ‘home’ is constantly threatened by forces I can’t control and can at any time be taken away.
It sounds crazy that buying a house is the most practical option, but considering that any apartment rental in this area wants at LEAST $2,000 at signing for first/last month rent and security deposit, plus pet fees for our cat, it really is.
What we need is enough for a down payment, boxes and packing supplies, and a moving truck: $2500 by 01/20.
If you can’t donate, please consider reblogging to help me out.
As of November 1st, we have raised 550$. Unfortunately, as some of you know, I was hit with an emergency dental issue, and the only way to pay to be seen was to dip into this fundraiser. Currently we have
349/2500
As of December first:
950/2500

I recommend definitely taking the landlord to court; he did violate the lease, and didn’t notify either of you of the real estate agent coming over or his plans on what to do with the house. Integrity and consistency needs to be upheld against them especially for someone who is clinically (and according to government record) disabled and cannot provide for themselves at the moment.
Worst case you have to do it in order get extra and assistance to move forward. But I’m just spit balling here. ifridiot reblogged this from ifridiot
