concept: the scene in little iliad where odysseus sneaks into troy to find the palladium and helen recognizes him, but it’s shot exactly like the window reunion scene from doctor who

How did I not hear about France banning hijabs? What’s going on?

long story short, there’s legislation in the process of being passed that would

  • ban girls under 18 from wearing any form of religious head covering in public, and although it’s obviously aimed at muslim women, it would also affect other faith groups that practice similar forms of modest dress
  • ban islamic swimwear in schools and public (there is already a modest swimwear ban in place at public beaches, this just extends it)
  • ban mothers wearing hijab from entering schools or participating in school field trips or extra curriculars
  • ban the slaughter of halal poultry - the cheapest and most easily accessible form of meat protein for the muslim community
  • extend school hijab bans to universities
  • prevent muslim women from choosing healthcare providers based on gender (which many muslim women prefer to do, since many exams require removal of clothing, etc)
  • ban muslim parents from homeschooling
  • force halal markets to sell pork and alcohol or face closure
  • ban foreign flags at weddings

What can I do to help? This sounds utterly outrageous and I want to help out in any way I can even though I am just in the US.

hey guys! lots of people are asking how to help, so i’m reblogging this again with some more info and resources. please remember that, like i stated before, this is not yet law but in the process of becoming law.

more information is coming out daily, and there are a few corrections and updates to note:

  • the modest swimwear ban, though it was overturned in 2016 for public beaches, will still affect public pools and schools
  • the halal ban is not technically a “ban”, but it is still expected to severely impact the industry in a way that could produce similar effects and make halal poultry less affordable and accessible to the communities that rely on it as an affordable staple.
  • the notion to extend the hijab ban to universities is not yet in effect or being introduced, but many fear it will be the next step

How can you help?

Here are some info posts on how to help. Sources will also be linked at the bottom:

today, 8th of april, is the international rromani day. today the rroma are still subjected to discrimination, marginalisation and segregation. discrimination is widespread in every field of public and personal life, including access to public places, education, employment, health services and housing. the rroma community is still not regarded as an ethnic or national minority group in every member state (in europe) and thus it does not enjoy the rights pertaining to this status in all the countries concerned.

bring awareness of this issue. this is a map with that reflects the size of the rroma population in each european country.

Some sites to donate money to help to better the life of rroma communities:

Feel free to add your paypal, cashapp, etc to this post if you’re rroma. Also if you know of local/national organisations that accept donations add them to this post as well.

Challenge #03010-H087: Secrets of the Network

They were the sons of the owner of a DeRegger system. Their father was the CEO above all other CEO’s, and his word, and theirs by extension, were law. However, seeing all the degradation in the worlds their father commanded, they decided to change things. They’d had the best education money could buy, even being allowed to get a higher education in the Alliance worlds, “to know their infidelities, insanity, godlessness, and excess my sons” was their father’s reason. However, that education gave them something their father didn’t expect. Compassion. – Lessons

Just as you don’t know you’re on a Deathworld until you leave it, you also don’t know you’re on a Deregger colony until you hit Alliance space. So it was for the sons of Nigel Lodalute. He had had enough of the Alliance winning all the time, and demanded that his heirs learn the secrets of the alliance so that the Fiscal Empire of Lodalute Incorporated could prove their true economic strength and get one up on those evil socialist overlords trying to overtake the one true way.

Nigel did what he always accused the Alliance of doing, and sent his young to take advantage of the other education system to learn the secrets and use them back home. He insisted that they return, and had an unbreakable contract to prevent them from defecting. Even the CRC said it was a perfectly amenable agreement.

So they went. Nigel VI and his younger brother Steve III. There was a mandatory period of culture shock where they kept wondering how the system held itself together. Their chief concern was who had to pay for all of it, and how the administration managed to manage everyone’s Time. They were encouraged to dig deep, and what they found shocked them.

Everything Is AWFUL and I’m Not Okay: Questions to Ask Before Giving Up on Yourself

Are you hydrated?

If not, have a glass of water. Dehydration can mimic or increase feelings associated with anxiety and a well hydrated brain functions optimally. Avoid excess caffeine.

Have you eaten in the past three hours?

Don’t be a victim of hanger! Get some food–something with protein, not just simple carbs or high-fat. Nuts, hummus, and veggies are great options to feed your studying brain. Keep healthy snacks within reach to avoid mindlessly chowing down on sweets.

Have you stretched your legs in the past day?

If not, do so right now. If you don’t have the energy or time for a run or a trip to the gym, just walk around the block or building. Even minimal exercise preps the mind for learning so that you can focus better and recall things easier, plus it’s good to get a change of scenery.

Have you said something nice to someone in the past day?

Do so, whether online or in person. Make it genuine! We bet your study partner would appreciate a compliment.

Have you moved your body to music in the past day?

If not, jog for the length of a song at your favorite tempo, or just dance around your bedroom for the length of an upbeat song (singing along is a bonus)

Have you cuddled a living being in the past two days?

If not, do so. Don’t be afraid to ask for hugs from friends of friends’ pets. Most of them will enjoy the cuddles too; you’re not imposing.

Have you started or changed any medications in the past couple of weeks, including skipped doses or a change in generic prescription brand?

That may be screwing with your head. Give things a few days, then talk to your doctor if it doesn’t settle down.

If daytime: are you dressed?

If no, put on clean clothes that aren’t PJs. Give yourself permission to wear something special, whether it’s a funny t-shirt or a pretty dress.

If nighttime: are you sleepy and fatigued but resisting going to sleep?

Put on PJs, make yourself cozy in bed with a teddy bear and the sound of falling rain, and close your eyes for fifteen minutes while focusing on breathing deeper with every breath- no electronic screens allowed! Adequate sleep is a necessity for stress management.

Do you feel ineffective?

Pause right now and get something small completed, whether it’s responding to an email, loading the dishwasher, or tidying up your room. Good job!

Do you feel unattractive?

Take a darn selfie. Your friends will remind you how great you look. You are always insta-worthy.

Do you feel paralyzed by indecision?

Give yourself ten minutes to sit back and figure out a game plan for the day. If a particular decision or problem is still being a roadblock, simply set it aside for now, and pick something else that seems doable. Right now, the important part is to break through that stasis, even if it means doing something trivial.

Have you over-exerted yourself lately–physically, emotionally, socially, or intellectually?

That can take a toll that lingers for days. Give yourself a break in that area, whether it’s physical rest, taking some time alone, or relaxing with some silly entertainment for a little. Time spent refreshing yourself is never time “wasted!”

Have you waited a week?

Sometimes or perception of life is skewed, and we can’t even tell that we’re not thinking clearly, and there’s no obvious external cause. It happens. Keep yourself going for a full week, whatever it takes, and see if you still feel the same way then.

You’ve made it this far; and you will make it through. You are stronger than you think.

Because someone might need this today

You have survived 100% of your worst days.

This too shall pass.
