The two most common insulin products are Novo Nordisk’s Novolin and Eli Lilly’s Humulin. The main COVID vaccine providers are Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson and Johnson, and AstraZeneca. So, same people? Nope. I’m not saying these companies have never done anything wrong, but use factual examples.

2016- Pfizer was fined $106M for a 2600% price hike on its epilepsy drug.

2019- J&J increased most of its drug prices by ~7% (Inflation was ~1.8%).

2020- Astrazeneca hiked prices on its popular drugs by up to 6% (Inflation was ~1%). The company then made a second round of increases after it secured a $1.2B from the U.S. for vaccine development. Astrazeneca made over $3.6B in profit in the first half of 2020.

2021-Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J are prepared to raise the COVID-19 vaccine price after the pandemic is contained in the US. They’ve only resisted hiking the price now to save face while they are being used in the US. Meanwhile, Pfizer hasn’t given access to its vaccine to over 85% of the world.

The entire pharmaceutical industry is abysmal. Every company has a similar agenda: maximize profit even at the expense of human life

Here’s a map of the flat earth go nuts

If Earth was flat wouldn’t the continents not have that curve to them?

would look more like this

image

Man I have neve realized that if I just started going North and never stopped going forward I would eventually end up in Austrailia. Like yeah the earth is round but I never realized all the continents were lined up like that when arranged flat on a surface

not really how that works. this is an unraveled sphere. on an intact sphere if you followed your meridian eventually youd end up in the same place more or less

I’m not sure how to explain to y'all that the flat Earthers are not particularly concerned with how this “actually works”

I’m not talking to flat earthers honey

We’re just two boys talking about Earth

image

Here look at the extra continents flat earth DLC

Where are Atlantis and Lemuria

Those were Preorder DLC. You can still get them if you order the collector’s edition.

I got the flat earth GOTY edition and it only had Lemuria :(

Fuckers left off Mu again. ISTG…

sometimes I get so angry thinking about ‘The Imitation Game’ that I have to go in a little ‘upset big tantrum room’ in my head for a calm down

like, Benisnatch Cumberque played the same character he’s always plays as an asshole genius and we were all supposed to be okay with it, but it’s basically character slander

at different parts of the movie Turing is described as ‘arrogant, “inhuman,” “narcissistic,” and even “a monster,” in the film he goes against those around him and is shown to periodically ignore and belittle his colleagues

And. I. Am. So. Angry.

Alan Turing was described by his friends and people that knew him as “intensely shy and kindly”, he was said to “inspire loyalty and affection among those who appreciated his unusual gifts” and was “unfailingly generous with his time and expertise, especially toward younger recruits”

He was kind, he was kind, HE WAS KIND, he was kind

he was kind and geeky and awkward and gay, I don’t care if the whole of society doesn’t find that compelling, I don’t care if we don’t value kindness as an attribute in men, he deserved to be loved and respected as he was, not as we wish he was

I am so sorry Alan Turing, I am so sorry your story was not told with care and thoughtfulness, I am so sorry you didn’t get to be shown to be deeply in love with the men you loved, I am sorry your great and terrible tragedy was never unfolded as a kind and brilliant man abused by a horrible homophobic system

You are a hero that turned the tides of history like no other and I am so sorry

hey op if you’re looking for a kinder movie about alan turing, you should check out breaking the code (1996). breaking the code was originally a stage play, and this is a filmed adaptation. it’s more faithful to his personality, stars derek jacobi (who was also a gay man and plays the part with so much sympathy), and it doesn’t bungle historical details for the sake of adding more drama. here’s a link to a youtube playlist where you can watch it in full

He felt bad for the children who were stuck at bletchley park without their toys so he used spare paper from his office to make them a monopoly board by hand

He was also reported as having a goofy sense of humor where he used to make a show of saying goodbye to everyone at the party and then walk into the closet instead of out the front door

Plus, he was quoted as saying quips like “Beyond the way they speak, there is only one (no two!) features of American life which I find really tiresome. The impossibility of getting a bath in the ordinary sense and their ideas on room temperature.” — Alan Turing (1936)

He was a huge athlete and biked everywhere and sometimes ran the five miles to work every morning, and did things like calculate when his bike chain would break so he could keep riding the thing despite it being ancient

He was still “odd” according to his coworkers as he sometimes wore a gasmask to work to avoid spring allergies and used to chain his coffee mug up to avoid theft at the office, but the same colleagues described him as very friendly, open, and thoughtful as well if not shy.

and finally, of course, there was Porgy

image

He used to practice his Cambridge lectures in front of this stuffed bear he got in college named Porgy and was delighted when his mom sewed it a little outfit. He kept the bear with him throughout life.

Like, it’s 100% true that Kids These Days tend to be less computer literate than my generation was at that age, but that isn’t because they’re lazy.

It’s because consumer software has been growing steadily more user-hostile for the last twenty solid years, and this is a deliberate tactic on the part of major software vendors in order to manipulate people into paying money and/or installing adware in order to access functionality that their systems were already perfectly capable of.

Basically, big software vendors have realised that you can charge people for access to things they already have if you can prevent them from realising that they have it; this is now a major plank of their business model.

This is why the Right to Repair movement is incomplete without taking software into consideration: having direct, unencumbered, and unobfuscated access to the guts of your software is just as essential to sustainable computing as not having to piss around with eight different sizes of screws with four different proprietary screw-head designs in order to crack open your smartphone.

(And no, simply being pro-free-software isn’t sufficient. Large chunks of the open source movement have also historically been broadly hostile to end-user accessibility, albeit for completely different reasons than the commercial software vendors are, and a lot of open source software badly fails to meet the “unobfuscated access” criterion.)

Tearful mom begs Texas lawmakers not to throw her in jail for supporting her trans child

saywhat-politics:

The mother of a transgender boy testified before the Texas legislature in tears as Republicans try to pass a bill to criminalize parents who support their transgender children.

“I’m terrified to be here today,” said Amber Briggle told the Texas Senate Committee on State Affairs at a hearing earlier this week. “I’m afraid that by speaking here today that my words will be used against me should S.B. 1646 or S.B. 1311 pass, and my sweet son whom I love more than life itself will be taken from me.”

Challenge #03019-H096: The Walking Wounded

They had anxiety issues, didn’t sleep well, often awakened in tears. After years of war, living in peace was very hard. They left to get groceries and returned to find a shocking discovery. A massive tank was in their apartment with an odd arrangement. One side was the life support system for the tank, the other side was a large metal box, almost as tall as they were, attached via wide metal tubes. Inside the tank was a huge octopus, or what seemed to be an octopus. Still, it was a lovely arrangement, and caring for the octopus, making sure the water was clean, there was plenty of food, soft music, was not only easy, but soothing. However, during a rain storm, when thunder set off the PTSD, another surprise occurred. The octopus could talk, and, acting as a therapist, was trying to calm them down. – Anon Guest

War is hell, and all the devils wear uniforms. Ex-Sergeant Dae knew this as a fact. When they throw soldiers at a problem they didn’t want to solve by other means, it got messy. It got brutal. Those who came back without their wounds on the outside often came back with a hell of a lot more damage where it didn’t show. Not until something happened to set them off.

Thankyou for your service, soldier. Welcome to Respite Station. We’re going to look after you. Sit. Stay. Good dog. Dae spent a solid week inside his livesuit until all scans confirmed it a habitable environment. The lung-melting spores of Kacticus V were a lasting lesson about assumptions. He didn’t need PhysServ so no therapists turned up, but the department did gift him nutritionally appropriate rations, and then options to branch out into a healthy yet interesting diet. Including options for “sanity treats”. Ha. As if food treats could restore his broken brain.

The habitat was, surprisingly, a Standard Double. Space enough for two people to not get into each other’s elbows, but only one sleep niche. He’d run the test protocols daily and checked the maintenance alerts like the paranoid shit he was. Pros, he had more space to throw a wobbler when something set him off. Pros, the garden space was nice and big and had an artificial sky. Cons, some spaces in this place were big enough to have their own weather. Cons, including electrical storms. Cons, especially thunder, which carried through the superstructure. Pros, if it counted, MentServ was sending him a live-in therapist sometime real soon now.

awesome story. black doctors and nurses are the best.

We need more of this

I’m not a PoC but this is just incredible, *exceptional*, culturally sensitive patient care, period. Absolutely should be shared with every healthcare professional I know.

We should always keep in mind that we are treating an entire person, not simply their condition, and the effects seemingly minor kindnesses can have on them long after they leave our care.

If you want to support black doctors who are just starting out, Farrah-Amoy Fullerton, a fourth-year med student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham just set up a way for people to help black fourth year med students transition to their residencie. This often means moving to a new city where they won’t get a paycheck for weeks. Black students are also less likely to have access to generational wealth to keep them afloat during school. So if you have a few bucks and want to buy a graduation gift for a future black doctor, check out this article or search #medgradwishlist on twitter.
