But it will ALSO mean that those agencies will offer to settle the bill for sometimes half of the sticker price. They bought it for a quarter or less. Don’t worry about the credit score. You can fix it later.

They just don’t tell you about it because they figure *someone* will magically give you a million dollars. If possible, have a no-nonsense friend familiar with credit or collections agencies call with you there. Authorize that person to speak on your behalf on speaker phone. Explain having no income and how sick you are. They can negate most bills and lower others.
